Abstract

The frail nature of Nigeria economy can be attributed to its being petroleum based. Meanwhile, studies have indicated that Nigeria is rich in a money spinning asset called dimension stone. Despite these enormous opportunities, very little published data exist. Therefore, there is need to evaluate the suitability of some basement complex rock exposures between latitudes 8.35oand 08.75oand longitudes 40 and 4.650. Field mapping revealed the study area is made up of rocks that belong to the migmatite gneiss complex and Older Granites suite. Of these exposures, migmatite at Shao and Laduba, porphyritic granite at Adekanbi, granitic gneiss at Bulletine and Micheal-Imodu, fine grained granite at Igbetti and augen gneiss at Okolowo were selected for detailed suitability analysis. Fracture mapping revealed that the exposures have a low joint density, hence can produce reasonable blocks for dimension stone. Petrographic analysis of the exposures revealed the presence of quartz, plagioclase, orthoclase, microcline, biotite, muscovite, chlorite, hornblende and opaque minerals occurring as individual crystals, intergrowth, alteration or inclusions. Modal composition revealed chloritization in Adekanbi granite. The rocks compressibility, flexural, density, modulus of rupture, hardness and water absorption capacity ranged between 130.77% and 199.15%, 18.52% and 25.51%, 2410.91% and 2518.18%, 11.5% and 17.85%, 48.59% and 84.01%, 0.18% and 0.44% respectively. Polished samples displayed wide range of colour and patterns. The suitability of the outcrops is in this order; granite gneiss at Bulletine, granite gneiss at Micheal-Imodu, porphyritic granite at Adekanbi, fine grained granite at Igbetti, migmatite at Shao and augen gneiss at Oko-olowo, and migmatite at Laduba. A market survey of dimension stones within Ilorin showed there is high demand for locally produced stones whose marketability is based on its uniqueness. Bulletine, Micheal-Imodu and Adekanbi exposures were found to have the highest potential for dimension stone production.
