Abstract

This study examines the application of the Arabic particles in the Arabic writings in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State-Nigeria between 1937–1993. There search significantly serves as a true symbol that exemplifies the nature and level of Arabic Education in Oke-Ogun area during the selected period, as it highlights some critical issues of grammatical errors which should be averted in the modern studies for the purpose of developing Arabic language. The study aims at examining the grammatical standards of those writings, thereby traces the background of Arabic Education in the area during the pre and post colonial eras in Nigeria, presenting the grammatical errors committed in those scholarly efforts which are not only to be corrected but also to be taken as a teaching guide to predict similar errors and develop appropriate teaching methodology. The study adopts inductive and descriptive methods to present and analyze those particles in the literary works of selected authors. The Research Findings are as follows: The Arabic writings were very scarce in those days compared to the Modern time. Out of the little writings, Iseyin produced about 70% of the works, however, most of the works were authored by Abdul Rahim Hamzah: the present Mufti of the area. Most of the then scholars in the region paid serious attention to the right application of the Arabic particles thereby reducing the grammatical errors in their writings. The quality of the prose is higher than poetry in the then Oke-Ogun as most of the poems composed contain too many errors. The study concludes that as essential as Arabic particles are in sentence construction, none of them could be “Zaidah” (Excrescence/Dysfunction) as so claimed by the scholars of Syntax. It therefore, affirms that they are either technically or literally functioning. The research consequently recommends that efforts should be made by the Arabic scholars to carry out critical and error analysis studies in other local Arabic literary works, in order to have good Arabic works that will be useful for the protection of the Yoruba intellectual property expressed in Arabic language.
