Abstract : Skill acquisition and academic performance of Business Education students through social media (SM) in Colleges of Education in Southwest, Nigerians are not encouraging as students learn more negative things through social media and this has been a thing of concern among stakeholders. To correct this problem, this study examined the influence of social media on skill acquisition and academic performance of Business Education students in Colleges of Education in Southwest, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study consisted of 4,602 Business Education students in the twelve public Colleges of Education in Southwest, Nigeria. A random sampling technique was used to obtain a sample size of 461 respondents. Two instruments were used for data collection tagged: Social Media Use and Students' Skill Acquisition Questionnaire (SMUSSAQ) and Students Academic Performance Proforma (SAPP). The questionnaire content was validated by three experts from the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship Education, Kwara State University, Malete. Cronbach Alpha method was adopted to ensure the reliability of the instrument with the coefficient of 0.83, which indicated that the instrument for the study was reliable. Five research questions were raised, and seven hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Mean and standard deviation was employed to answer research questions while t-test, linear regression, and multiple regression analysis were used to test the null hypotheses of the study. The findings revealed among others that Facebook, YouTube, Whatsapp messenger, and Imo weresocial media platforms usually used by business education students in Colleges of Education in Southwest, Nigeria. To a high extent, social mediausage positively influenced commutation skills of Business Education students in Colleges of Education. These students use social media to a high extent; social media usage positively influenced creativity and innovative skills of the students. It was concluded that social media usage influence skill acquisition and academic performance of Business Education students in Southwest Colleges of Education. Based on the finding, it was recommended among others that Business Education teachers should encourage students to use social media to acquire necessary information for skill acquisition. Policy to regulate the use of social media outlets for skill acquisition should be put in place by the Government, and conscious efforts must be made by curriculum planners to integrate Business Education curricula with social media.
