Since the Q method is one of the best methods to study subjectivity scientifically, it has been used to explore the perceptions of Saudi international student mothers of their personal traits and characteristics while living in the United States and how do these compare to the traits and characteristics that are perceived to have existed prior to coming to the US. Forty-two Q sorts were analyzed (2 from each of the n = 21 participants) using Q sample of N = 60 statements (structured according to the Big Five variables) to answer the study question. The results revealed four factors of Saudi mothers who are The Dependable Mother (Factor A) that is defined by 12 Q sorts7 in the US and 5 in the KSA, plus an additional 7 that were mixed cases, the Confident Mother (Factor B) included 7 purely defining Q sorts (3 US, 4 KSA) and only 2 mixed cases, the Withdrawn Mother (Factor C) was also comprised of 7 defining Q sorts (3 US, 4 KSA) and 9 mixed cases, and the Sociable Mother (Factor D), which was the least numerous of the four types (2 Q sorts each from US and KSA, plus 2 mixed cases). Finally, approximately half of the participants displayed stability in their KSA-to-US self-descriptions, whereas the other half demonstrated significant alterations in self-description in the transition to the US, most in a positive direction (i.e., enhanced self-esteem and confidence), but three showing reductions in self-esteem due to different circumstances or their personality.
