Abstract
:
The internationalization of higher education has resulted in a growing number of Western expatriate higher education administrators working as expatriates worldwide. The accelerated development of higher education in several countries on the Arabian Peninsula has included the global mobilization of student affairs and services administrators from Western countries. It is necessary for expatriate student affairs and services administrators to be culturally dexterous to best serve their students. Global dexterity is defined by Dr. Andy Molinsky (2013) as the ability to adapt one’s behavior across cultures. This action research study was guided by the questions: How can higher education professionals incorporate best practices for global dexterity-building amongst a group of Western expatriates working on the Arabian Peninsula? And, what are the cross-cultural challenges encountered by Western expatriate higher education administrators working on the Arabian Peninsula? A number of promising human resource development practices related to intercultural development were tested through three cycles of participant involvement. Key findings include the applicability of the Molinsky Global Dexterity Model (2013); adaptability of Molinsky’s My Way, Your Way, Our Way framework; increased global dexterity of participants; utilization of a community of practice; infusion of intergroup dialogue components; utilization of virtual human resource development environments; and the effectiveness of swift trust.
