Abstract : Zinc-iodine rechargeable cells have been constructed in two configurations: hollow fiber and flat sheet module. These cells have been tested with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) gel as a medium for the electrolytes (ZnI2/KCl 3 molal). The PVA can complex iodine, which is readily available to the cathode upon discharge. Zinc covered the anode on charging. The highly crosslinked PVA gel shaped the deposit into a smooth surface. This general characteristic of the zinc-iodine/poly(vinyl alcohol) rechargeable cell has been studied in the two configurations, using different varieties of electrodes and under different conditions. High current and voltage efficiency over 80% have been recorded for most of the cells loaded with 10 wt.% PVA. The highest efficiency for hollow fiber cell (92%) has been found with carbon fiber braided electrodes which have been inserted in the cathode chamber. Other parameters, such as cell diameter, length, and electrode distance, have been found to influence the theoretical energy density as well as performance.
