Abstract : An experimental investigation was carried out to evaluate the efficiencies of different selective solvents used for the extraction of aromatic hydrocarbons from Saudi Arabian crude oils light fraction (Boiling range 23-200C). The solvents used were 3-methoxypropionitrile, Dimethylsulfoxide, Phenol, Sulfolane, Nitrobenzene and Ethylene Glycol. Parameters studied are operating temperature (range 20-80C), solvent-to-oil ratio (range 1:1 to 3:1), selectivity and solvent capacity. One of the main objectives of this study is to determine quantitatively the potential of the recovery of aromatics from such fractions. Separated aromatics could then be used as a basic feedstock for the petrochemical industry in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The results indicate that sulfolane exhibits excellent extractive properties as compared to other solvents. The feasibility study provides justification for setting up aromatics production plant in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
