Abstract
:
Purposes. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitudes of senior high school students and their parents towards vocational education. The second purpose was to ascertain whether there was a relationship between respondent background characteristics and attitudes towards vocational education. Procedures. The population of this study was all academic and vocational students and their parents in the Province of Yogyakarta. The sample size was 600; 150 people were drawn from each of four population groups. Stratified random sampling was used. The instrument consisted of items used to obtain answers from respondents concerning their attitudes towards vocational education. Field testing of the instrument was done to ensure clarity and understandability to the responding groups. The reliability of the instrument was evaluated by using Cronbach's alpha internal consistency statistic (usd\alphausd =.8865). The validity of the instrument was judged by several teacher educators to make sure that it measured what it purported to measure. Data were collected by administering the instrument to students and mailing it to their parents. Data were analyzed by using means, 2-way analysis of variance, t-test, and Spearman and Point Biserial correlations. Findings. The grand attitude mean was 3.06. Differences in attitudes towards vocational education were found among the following: type of respondent; curriculum; academic and vocational student; parents of academic and parents of vocational students; academic students and their parents; vocational students and their parents. Relationships between respondent characteristics and attitudes towards vocational education were found as follows: parents' income, rs = usd-.2831;usd parents' education, rs = usd-.2974;usd parents' occupation, rs = usd-.2973;usd and student location, rpb = usd-.2058.usd Conclusions. It was concluded that respondents as a whole had positive attitudes towards vocational education. Students had more positive attitudes towards vocational education than their parents. Vocational students and their parents had more positive attitudes towards vocational education than academic students and their parents. Vocational students had more positive attitudes towards vocational education than academic students. Educational, occupational, and income levels were indirectly associated with attitudes towards vocational education. Parents' age, parents' exposure to vocational education, student sex, and family size were not related with attitudes towards vocational education. Urban students were less favorable towards vocational education than were rural students.
