Abstract : Two muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) families, 8610 and 8623, were studied for the inheritance of dark- vs. light-green immature fruit skin color. F and F2 progeny results from a series of crosses among dark- and light-skinned types indicated that a single gene pair was responsible for inheritance of this trait in both families, with the allele for dark-skinned fruit dominant and hereby symbolized as Dg. Striped skin color of immature fruit was studied in a melon from Afghanistan, PI 125970, and found to be due to two dominant, complementary, unlinked genes, symbolized here as St-2 and St-3. Crossing of the non-striped line 10-18, identified as st-2/st-2 St-3/St-3, with the striped-skinned melon, 'Santa Claus', suggested that the latter cultivar is homozygous dominant for both of these genes.
