Abstract : Response in durum wheat to a wide range of durum leaf rust and inheritance of resistance to a portion of this pathogen population were determined in greenhouse seedling tests. These tests aimed at developing a new differential set since the current differentials have limited usefulness for studying the virulence-variability in durum leaf rust populations. Twenty-one durum cultivars of diverse origin were tested with 166 single pustule leaf rust isolates, collected mostly from durum wheat around the world. Cultivar-specific 'Y' (greater compatibility toward leaf tip) and 'Z' (greater compatibility toward leaf base) patterns were often associated with resistance response. Immer was resistant to all isolates, and could be utilized as a resistance-source for cultivar improvement. Arabian Durum, Local Red, Karkov, and RL 6089 were susceptible to nearly all isolates. Other cultivars responded differentially to the isolates, however, the ability to differentiate the pathogen population varied greatly between geographical areas. Analyses of F2 progeny from susceptible/resistant crosses with one to twelve (8 to 12 in crosses involving 11 of the 15 resistant parents studied) rust isolates indicated that the resistance to an isolate was often conditioned by one or two genes. In all, 27 dominant and 21 recessive resistance genes were identified among 15 cultivars. Peliss had six genes; Arnautka, Glossy Hugenot, Golden Ball, and Mocho de Espiga Branca had five; Immer had four; Arendeto, Kingfisher, Kubanka, and Rojal de Almeria had three; RL 6089 had two; and Arabian Durum, Karkov, Local Red, and Powarkheda Red had one. Differences in specificity, resistance phenotypes, and inheritance indicated that 21 of the dominant and all of the 21 recessive genes were probably unique. Differences in resistance-spectrum of the parents to pathogen populations show that these genes should be useful for studying the virulence-variability in durum leaf rust populations. A preponderance of mesothetic resistance response with 'Y' or 'Z' pattern, recessive inheritance, and comparisons with the known genes from the A or B genome of wheat strongly suggest that the leaf rust resistance genes in durum wheat are unique, and are different from their counterparts in bread wheat.
