Abstract : This thesis is a new study of the mosque of Ibn Tulun, which was built in 265 A.H./868 A.D., as it was created and as it developed over the centuries. It examines the mosque from a bibliographical, topographical, and architectural point of view, focusing on the architecture itself rather than on its decoration. The thesis re-examines Ibn Tulun's newly-founded capital city of al-Qata'i' and describes both its major monuments and divisions as well as the ceremonies that took place during important events and celebrations. The thesis also investigates the architectural components of the mosque and interprets each one from the point of view of the aesthetics of the building. The mosque of Ibn Tulun was used regularly until 292/905, when the Tulunid Dynasty came to an end and al-Qata'i' was destroyed by the Abbasid general Muhammad Sulayman al-Katib. The mosque survived for a while because of its religious significance, but it soon underwent a long period of neglect and fell in ruins. There were a few intervals when improvements and repairs were carried out. These resulted in great transformations that took place in the function of the mosque. The most important of the medieval additions and restorations were those of Sultan Lajin in 696/1296. After a period of ruin that lasted from the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century A.D., the mosque underwent a modern period of restoration that began with the work of the Comite de l'Art Arabe, in the 1890's and that continues today under the direction of the Egyptian Antiquities Organization. A detailed survey of a substantial number of photographs of the mosque from the 19th century to the present is in a separate volume.
