Abstract : The last two decades have witnessed an increasing interest in the study of women in the Ancient Near East. Several academic institutions have integrated the subject into their curriculum, and one can even consult related Internet sites such as DIOTIMA: Materials for the Study of Women and Gender in the Ancient World. The portrayal of women is a leitmotiv found in all genres of Egyptian literature, but "because most texts were written by men of the scribal class from a male point of view,"2 it is virtually impossible to take these texts at face value and ignore the distortions due to gender perspective. Since this thesis deals with a corpus of texts belonging to ancient Egyptian narrative literature, the first chapter will attempt to establish a taxonomy of the extants stories so as to determine whether or not the role of female characters in a given tale is determined by the nature of the narrative. Once this is done, the actual corpus of stories with which this study will concern itself will include: Sinuhe, Hirtengeschichte, the four extant tales from Pap. Westcar, the Two Brothers, the Doomed Prince, Truth and Falsehood, the Contendings of Horus and Seth, Astarte and the Sea, Wenamun, Setne I, Setne II and Egyptians and Amazons. The second chapter will be devoted to the study of "Character Types." The particular roles women play in the stories will be investigated in order to determine whether a woman is ever portrayed as an original character, or whether she simply fits a stereotype, and as such, serves a predictible purpose. The third chapter will analyze the symbolic association of the goddess Hathor with the female characters of the tales. Finally, the fourth and last section of this study will evaluate the literary perspective of "the woman who is a stranger." The "outside woman" and the various literary manifestations of this particular form of xenophobia, as well as its literary evolution, will be analyzed in relation to contemporary social and political developments. ftnhttp://www.uky.edu/ArtsSciences/Classics/ biblio/ane.html (link to Egypt and the Ancient Near East). 2Robins, Women in Ancient Egypt (1993), p. 176.
