Abstract : This qualitative and phenomenological study sought to determine if there is a need for additional programming on the benefits of a more positive school climate and school connectedness as a means of decreasing school violence. The background and history of school violence as well as statistics that prove that violence in schools is an issue that is worthy of effective prevention strategies are presented. Additionally, this paper discusses current strategies that are in place in schools as well as others that have been tried. The effectiveness or lack thereof for each of these strategies is shared and discussed and backed by the literature. Focus groups were held with both students and staff members to further examine the perception of violence and safety within the school as well as the reasons for these perceptions. Further, students and staff members were asked questions regarding the relationships that exist in the building and the ways these relationships affected their perceptions of safety. Results indicated that the overall school climate and the sense of connectedness that students, staff members, and parents felt toward the school significantly impacted the perception of safety within the building. Further, although the findings indicated a positive overall perception, it was clear that additional training/programming on the benefits of school climate and school connectedness would prove a worthwhile endeavor toward the prevention of school violence.
