Abstract

This research project is focused on the integration of religion and spirituality into the parenting of families that include children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although most research examines how families that include children with ASD refer to religion and spirituality as coping mechanisms, little has been investigated about how those coping methods affect solo parents and the role of spirituality in their parenting of children with ASD. Solo parents include widowed, separated, divorced, single by choice, adoptive or foster parents, or military spouses with deployed partners. The literature review suggests that, if religion and spirituality have made a positive impact on the lives of co-parenting families who have children with ASD, then integrating religion and spirituality into solo-parenting families who have children with ASD may also be found to make a positive impact on those lives. The participants in this study were from the United States, including Puerto Rico, and included 8 solo parents of children aged 6-20 who have been diagnosed with ASD. These solo-parent participants were interviewed. The data was analyzed to demonstrate the ways in which the integration of spirituality into parenting children with ASD may be of support to solo parents of such children and their families. Future implications of the study's results included potential applications of its findings to training and practice for solo parents of children with ASD, and religious/spiritual leaders.
