Abstract : This research study explored the meaning of the lived spiritual conversion experience for the African American male by exploring in-depth descriptions of the phenomenon through semi-structured interviewing. The spiritual conversion process has been studied from perspectives of African American women, African men, and college students; however, there were limited research studies on the phenomenon for African American men. This study sought to answer the following question: How does the African American man who is a member of a church community describe his lived spiritual conversion experience? The identified population consisted of adult African American men who self-reported going through spiritual conversion. Data analysis followed the steps of Moustakas’s transcendental phenomenological research method. This study analyzed transcripts of 12 participants who self-reported having experienced spiritual conversion and were actively involved with their churches. This study provided six themes describing spiritual conversion for the African American male. The six themes provided are (a) spiritual conversion is a self-reflective process of man seeking a relationship with a higher power; (b) spiritual conversion entails developing a level of self-awareness to recognize internal struggles and a willingness to confront these struggles; (c) transcendent thinking promotes changed life perspectives; (d) the onset of the conversion process is generally marked by a pivotal moment; (e) ownership of spiritual conversion is progressive, as a higher power reveals its sovereignty through life experiences; and (f) church communities serve as growth tools and social resource.
