Abstract	:	This thesis examines Junot Diaz’s award-winning novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao through the lens of translanguaging, a sociolinguistic process that seeks to analyze linguistic practices of bilingual speakers as fluid and singular, practices that bring together the personal experiences and histories of the speakers in order to create meaning. First, this project looks at how bilingual voices and Latinx identities have traditionally been treated within public spaces, continuously separated as Other from a dominant society that favors “pure” monolingual English. It further explores how U.S. Latinx authors have utilized their linguistic practices within literary spaces as a means of both privileging bilingual audiences over monolingual English readers and connecting languages and identities that have typically been treated as exclusively separate. By using translanguaging to analyze the historical and cultural importance of bilingual voices within Oscar Wao, this thesis argues that these practices help transform literary spaces into ones that embrace openness, foster in a new way of creating meaning and connection, as well as legitimize linguistic repertoires that embody multiple cultures.
