Abstract

Posttraumatic growth has been found to have positive benefits in one’s life following bereavement (Feigelman, Jordan, & Gorman, 2009). Multiple factors have been studied to determine their relationship to PTG, with findings suggesting that resiliency (Bensimon, 2012), social support (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004), event centrality (Taku, Tedeschi, & Cann, 2014), and religious coping (Pargament, Desai, & McConnell, 2006). Within bereavement literature the relationship to the deceased (Oginska-Bulik, 2015) and the circumstance of passing (Feigelman, Jordan, & Gorman, 2009) have been found to have possible influence on PTG. The following study investigated the relationship of social support, religious commitment, event centrality, resiliency, the circumstances of passing, and demographics with posttraumatic growth using multiple regression analysis in a sample of 165 bereaved individuals obtained through MTurk. Regression results indicated that the overall model predicted scores on the PTGI (R2 = .473, R2 adj = .456, F(5, 159) = 28.51, p < .001), with significant effects found in perceived social support (β = .281), religious commitment (β = .289), and centrality of events ( = .410) on reported scores on the PTGI. Implications of the research include that bereavement experiences can result in significant growth and change in bereaved individuals, particularly in individuals who seek social support during their grief, identify the event as being an essential part of their experience, and identify religion or spirituality as an important aspect of their daily routine. Clinical interventions with bereaved individuals should consider fostering growth experiences through the identified factors that contribute to posttraumatic growth.
