Abstract
:
Astronomy is one of the last hard sciences where the citizen can make significant contributions. Unlike many other sciences, the amateur has access to the same raw materials (the night sky) as the professional. Amateur astronomers have a long history of significant contributions, in the form of variable star observations, comet discoveries, mapping of the night sky, and recording transient events on the moon and planets.
