This study explored factors that influence people of African descent’s attitudes towards seeking professional mental health services. The predicting factors include the perception of mental illness, cultural beliefs, and religious/spiritual beliefs. The study examined how people of African descent’s perception of mental illness (including their perception about the cause of mental illness) influences their attitude towards seeking mental health services, and the ways their cultural and religious/spiritual beliefs impact their attitudes towards seeking mental health services. The Cultural Influences on Mental Health (CIMH) model was used as a conceptual framework to help understand the influence of culture on mental health. The CIMH model argues that culture contributes to differences in the prevalence of mental illness, the etiology and course of the disease, the expression or manifestation of distress, the diagnostic and assessment issues, the coping styles, and help-seeking pathways, and the treatment and intervention issues. The study also explored indigenous cultural and religious/spiritual healing practices could be incorporated into professional mental health services to promote mental health literacy and utilization of mental health services in Black/African-American communities.
