Abstract : American officials found themselves in a unique position when the United States declared war in 1917. For over two years the United States remained neutral in World War I but with the declaration of war, government officials and publishers now had to sell the idea of war to a skeptical American public. Before radio and large- scale recorded sound, sheet music provided an avenue for publishers and propagandists alike to distribute a powerful emotional message about the war. Significant scholarship on American music during the war has only recently been explored, and this field has the potential to expand the study of the American home front during World War I.
