Abstract	:	This paper gives an overview of the history of the zipper and of zipper manufacturers, with a focus on their use in the fashion industry after World War II. The first device that would eventually be developed into the modern zipper was patented at the closing of the nineteenth century. It entered broad public awareness as part of an accessory, a winter boot, in 1923. From there it has been incorporated onto garments and accessories of all type and class. Zippers have many advantages for use in dating a garment. Zippers are often imprinted with the name of their manufacturer, and sometimes with their country of manufacture. Design elements of zippers can be roughly aligned to particular manufacturers and time periods. At the end of the paper is an appendix with three hundred illustrated examples of dated zippers from educational and vintage collections. This guide is not comprehensive, but is intended to be representative of what there is to find in historic clothing collections.
