Abstract : Liquefaction has caused significant damage to shallow-founded structures in various regions around the world. Current procedures for evaluating the risk of liquefaction-related damage to buildings are based on evaluating the liquefaction resistance of soils in free-field conditions. These procedures do not incorporate the properties of the foundation or structure, or the interaction of these properties with characteristics of the soil profile. These procedures also typically give only deterministic estimates of liquefaction consequences. As performance-based earthquake engineering methods become more commonly used, and in the face of challenges that involve high levels of uncertainty, probabilistic methods are becoming more important. This dissertation proposes probabilistic methods for estimating the settlement and tilt of shallow-founded structures on liquefiable ground.
