Gladiators have been represented in American popular culture since the early 1900s. Unfortunately, their portrayal has consistently been inaccurate, although the particular errors in representation have changed over time. Since the general public has obtained most of its knowledge of gladiators through movies and television shows, the public's image of gladiators has been skewed. In order to show that the entertainment industry has the tools to do better when portraying historical characters or events, I have covered updated scholarship and recent archaeological discoveries. Also, I designed and executed a three-day camp for children. The thesis essay analyzes movies from 1907 to 2014, taking note of inaccuracies, cultural biases, and changes over time. Culture, race, and gender were all categories examined. The essay also analyzes two sets of survey results from a sample of approximately 203 people ranging from six years old to over sixty years of age. The thesis project, which took place at the Biblical History Center in LaGrange, Georgia was a 3-day camp that addressed Roman culture. It took on topics such as Roman religion, Roman entertainment, and a day in the life of a Roman. Each day consisted of a project program, craft, snack, and activity to engage children from ages 6 to 11 and to make each day fun and memorable for each child. The thesis project, in a fun way, utilized the thesis research to bring children’s attention to Roman culture, and presented the ancient world in a more accurate way than in popular media.
