Abstract : After almost a century of struggle, women achieved their goal of seeing a national amendment added to the Constitution guaranteeing suffrage without the bias of gender. The fight for women’s rights evolved throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, shifting from abolition to temperance to suffrage with the evolution occurring in Wisconsin simultaneously. When the United States entered World War I in 1917, the women of Southeastern Wisconsin had been working for suffrage for fifty years within the Wisconsin Woman Suffrage Association (WWSA).
