Abstract	:	As yet, there is no satisfactory etymology for the Ugaritic word sgr [sg(acute)r] (also spelled s(grave)g(acute)r ), a term for a shepherd's assistant. Here a survey of the texts where this word occurs is provided and the meaning ‘watchman’ or ‘guard’ is suggested on the basis of Modern South Arabian.
