Abstract

Although al-Zamakhshari's Qur'an commentary, al-Kashshaf , is one of the best-known works from mediaeval Islamic scholarship, a close examination of the secondary literature reveals that very little is known about this work. Likewise, while a number of Western and Middle Eastern scholars have given biographical notes of al-Zamakhshari, the former tend to repeat the same few facts while the latter are inclined to draw conclusions that their sources do not support. Previous scholarship, then, clearly demonstrates a need for a more in-depth study of both this author and his work. This thesis is divided into three main chapters; the first deals with al-Zamakhshari: his life, scholarly oeuvre and intellectual milieu; the second, with the Kashshaf : its origins, transmission, method and the Mu`tazilite thinking of its author that it could reflect; and the third, with the Kashshaf' s sources: contemporary and early works that could have influenced al-Zamakhshari or been used by him. Although divided into chapters and sections, this study of the Kashshaf reflects two main concerns: method and content. The question of method reflects a double preoccupation: al-Zamakhshari's approach to the qur'anic text and my own approach to the Kashshaf . The question of content deals with the material used in the Kashshaf , the names mentioned ('source universe') and the possible Mu`tazilite and early exegetical works that al-Zamakhshari made use of. This study seeks to be an original contribution to the knowledge of the mediaeval exegetical tradition. It gives the most complete account of al-Zamakhshari's life that can be known from the sources and establishes his scholarly lineage and bibliography. It demonstrates that Mu`tazilism played no significant role in al-Zamakhshari's commentary; rather, the research shows that al-Zamakhshari is traditional as to his sources and methods and that, in particular, he taps into independent lines of transmission of the early (2nd/8th c.) exegetical tradition (Mujahid, al-H[dotbelow]asan al-Bas[dotbelow]ri, al-Suddi, Sufyan al-Thawri). The thesis also examines al-Zamakhshari's use of al-Zajjaj's (d.ca.311/923) Ma`ani l-Qur'an , in order to show how he goes about using this earlier author, and to illustrate the methodological pitfalls and possible limits involved in attempting to determine the books al-Zamakhshari might have used.
