Abstract
:
This study falls under the category of history of ideas. It offers both a synthetic and analytical approach to the question of intellection and immortality in the writings of Gersonides and Moses Narboni. The study includes a philological and conceptual investigation about their views about intellection and immortality in light of their sources. The investigation begins with Greek philosophers (Plato, Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias, Themistius and Plotinus). It then focuses on Arabic philosophers (Al-Kindi, Alfarabi, Avicenna, Ibn Bajja, and Maimonides). One chapter covers Averroës' views and the development in his thought. Lastly it focuses on Gersonides and Narboni. The study shows that Averroës' "middle position" is already found in the writings of Themistius and Plotinus. Moreover, the study discusses the chronology of the writings of Averroës. It offers an analysis of the relationship between Narboni and Al-Ghazali. It also compares the views of Gersonides and Narboni and offers some observations.
