Abstract : This dissertation focuses on the novel delta-sigma modulator, called binary delta-sigma modulator, which is suitable for ultra high-speed Analog to Digital conversion in optical applications. A performance comparison of the binary delta-sigma modulator (BDSM) with the conventional discrete-time and continuous-time delta-sigma modulators will be investigated here. The comparison is based on simulation results for a sinusoidal input signal. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the spur-free dynamic range (SFDR), and the root-mean-square (RMS) error of the demodulated signal are computed and compared for all three modulators. Results indicate the BDSM performance measures are similar to those of the conventional ones. Comparison is also performed on the clocked-BDSM versus the BDSM. The results indicate that the clocked-BDSM performance degrades as the sample-and-hold sampling time increases above the BDSM sampling time. In addition to the performance analysis, a detailed theoretical analysis of the important modulator parameters is also given. Finally, this paper also discusses some alternative binary delta-sigma modulators, like high-order binary delta-sigma modulator (HBDSM) as well as multi-bit binary delta-sigma modulator (MBDSM) and others.
