Abstract	:	The wealth of scholarship on Senator Joe McCarthy and his anti-Communist crusade has undergone wave after wave of revisions over the past fifty years. Some scholars consider McCarthy the worst thing to happen to American politics in the postwar era. Others see him as a well-intentioned politician who seized a legitimate issue with the fervor of a true believer. Reality exists within these extreme positions. This thesis, developed from printed sources, is a systematic historiography, a decade-by-decade comparison of the interpretations by academicians and journalists of McCarthy and his crusade. The study identifies the interpretation by each scholar and places it in its correct temporal and topical context. This makes possible a methodical presentation of the similarities and differences between their conclusions, and how and why interpretations have changed. McCarthy and his crusade have been analyzed from every imaginable perspective, and the result is far more scholarly conflict than consensus.
