Requiem for New Times is a nine-movement requiem mass for choir, orchestra, percussion ensemble, soprano soloist and mezzo-soprano soloist. In addition to the traditional liturgy of the Catholic Church and its tenets, this work incorporates texts and philosophies of non-Western (and/or non-Christian) cultures. These cultures and religions include East Indian, Balinese, Tibetan, Japanese, Arabic, Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim. In addition, Requiem for New Times makes use of the music of a number of these cultures, often fused with, or juxtaposed to, music associated with our Western tradition. My intention is to create a truly “World Music” requiem. It is my hope that through the study of the philosophies and music of different cultures, the similarities between these cultures, rather than the differences, will come to light.
