Abstract : The phenomenon of adopted children following an accelerated developmental "catch up" period during the first twenty-four months following placement in an adoptive home has been well established. This study examined the effect of early intervention services on specific and global developmental domains. It was hypothesized that children participating in rehabilitation services will attain greater recovery than children receiving no additional services. A sample of convenience of 81 children adopted from Russia, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, and Georgia was collected. Children's ages ranged from 6 months through 38 months at time of adoption. Children were residing in their new adoptive homes for a minimum of 10 months Adoptive families were recruited from adoption support groups and referrals. A parental questionnaire, the Denver Prescreening Developmental Questionnaire II, and the Brigance Preschool Screen were mailed and completed by adoptive parents. A MANOVA was conducted to examine the effect of the rehabilitation engagement variables. Results were non significant, F (1, 79) + 1.46, p = <.20. The data was skewed and highly variable with majority of children receiving no interventions. A hierarchical regression analysis examined the relationship between the time spent in country, age, and their interaction on scores on the Brigance. Results were significant, R square = .24, F (1, 79) = 24.39, p < .001, indicating "time in the country" was a greater predictor of scores on the Brigance, accounting for 24% of the variance. The results of age was non-significant, R square = .01, p = .74. The interaction however, between time in country and age was significant, R square change = .05, F (1, 77) = 5.47, p = .02, although an inverse relationship, indicating as the child's age increases by month, their score decreased by 5%. An analysis to determine is a curvilinear relationship existed between age and scores on the Denver. Results were non-significant suggesting a lack of sensitivity in identifying delays across age for this population. Analyses examining the curvilinear relationship between both age and time in country on the Brigance were both significant. The results for age, F (4, 74) = 4.50, p = .006; results for time in country, F = (3,73) = 10.84, p < .001;F. Surprising was the lack of early intervention services sought out by adoptive parents, as well as the extended accelerated recovery period beyond twenty-four months.
