Abstract:War Stories is a thematically cohesive collection of poems that reveal the pressures and anxieties that are brought to bear upon families and individuals that are profoundly affected by military tradition and lifestyle, specifically in the blue-collar and Irish American communities of the anthracite mining region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The book is divided into three sections—the first section, "Military History", focuses on the military family, and how the individuals in a family unit are affected by a tradition of military service. "Wartime Romances" is more rooted in the present moment, and concerns the complexities and ordeals endured by men and women whose romantic relationships are affected by the military service of one of the partners, in a time when the United States is engaged in open-ended military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The concluding title section of the collection attempts to create a sense of the "big picture" of the current war.
