Abstract	:	This thesis engages reader response criticism to analyze the themes of self-fulfillment and independence for Nigerian women, wives and mothers as depicted in Buchi Emecheta's The Joys of Motherhood (1979). The study's central question is: what meanings do readers with different age, gender and education construct from reading this novel? This research also compares the similarities and differences of the interpretations given by literary critics, my mother, my husband and myself and examines the ramifications of these interpretations as they relate to marriage, poverty and motherhood. The over-all consistency in patterns of readers' interpretations leads to a profound statement of the novel's meaning: women, wives and mothers should negotiate empowering roles and identities for themselves, including violating traditional norms and crossing "sacred" lines that hamper their progress and pursuit of self-fulfillment.
