Nollywood is the third largest film market after Hollywood and the Hindu influenced Bollywood. Nollywood films have grown increasingly popular in the last decade, both throughout the African continent and abroad. An independent cinema, where films are produced, edited and distributed without any outside funding, these films go directly to DVD and are sold. Interestingly, the images, plots and character portrayals prevalent in some Nollywood films, appear to be heavily influenced by the West. Straight Outta Nigeria examines Nollywood films and compares them with the post-colonial cinema of the late Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene. | Subject | : | Communication and the arts; Sembene, Ousmane; Senegal; Original film; Film studies; 0900:Film studies | Added Entry | : | Long Island University, The Brooklyn Center |
