Abstract:May This Be Your Last Sorrow is a novel in stories about the coming of age of two Iranian boys raised in Watertown, Massachusetts. Omid and his mother, Heideh, immigrated to America in 1983, leaving behind Omid's father who Omid thinks is dead. They settle in Watertown, Massachusetts where Dari's family lives and the two boys and their mothers become friends. As the boys grow into young men, they separately learn of the painful family secrets that their mothers have kept from them, jeopardizing their relationships. The stories travel between Iran and America, between the mid sixties to post 9/11. The novel in stories explores the tensions between Iranian and American culture, predominantly in familial notions of duty and a desire for individual independence.
