Abstract : Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2005) and is on the rise in Pakistan ("Childhood Asthma", 2002). This study provides a descriptive analysis of the knowledge of caregivers regarding childhood asthma and its association with the severity of their child's asthma. A descriptive analysis of the collected data revealed that on average caregivers had a fairly high knowledge about childhood asthma. Although this may be interpreted as indicative of satisfactory levels of knowledge, caregivers' inability to correctly perceive their child's asthma severity, presence of misconceptions and the use of alternative treatment is a cause of concern. Moreover, this study found only a marginal association between the knowledge of caregivers regarding childhood asthma and the severity of the child's asthma perceived by them. The knowledge gained from this study will help public health professionals in developing and implementing asthma related educational interventions for Pakistani caregivers.
