Abstract:Vathek , by William Beckford, may perhaps be the oldest vampire novel in English literature, a possibility that has gone completely unnoticed until now. Additionally, Vathek is usually only analyzed in regards to the Orientalist nature of the text and how the novel creates a false and even malicious way of looking at Arabic and Muslim peoples. But after looking at the role of vampires in the novel, one cannot help but see the world of fantasy that Beckford created to exist outside of real time and space. It is the existence of vampires in the novel that reveals there is another way than just the overarching negative interpretation of it; the novel is perhaps only a fantasy, a place to get lost, have fun, and enjoy the splendor that is the world of Vathek .
