Abstract	:	This study addresses issues of representation and cultural expectations in the narratives of so-called second generation immigrant women in France. It covers the political and cultural history of immigration in France from the early 1950s to the situation in the suburbs today, looking at autobiographical texts and documentaries produced by members of the so-called second and third generation. It looks specifically at ways in which the media has manipulated popular representations of the Beur generation and has in particular exploited the image of young Beur women as victims. Analyzing the paratexts of Beur cultural production, I demonstrate that women are being marketed as victims or rebels, arguing that Arab (Beur) women are being used to support the French government's policies of assimilation and integration. Through close analyses of novels and film documentaries I discuss the illusion of self-representation and authenticity. Discussing the testimonial as a genre and the controversy around co-authored texts purporting to represent the experience of "people who do not write" (Philippe Lejeune), I interrogate the problem of "speaking for" in the production of women of North-African origin in France.
