Abstract:Wireless sensor networking (WSN) is an emerging field of research which encompasses communications, micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and embedded software technologies for numerous industrial, military, medical, agricultural, and transportation applications. Wireless sensor networks face various design and implementation challenges depending upon the type of applications, such as size, hardware architectures, power consumption, routing and communication protocols, etc. The lack of development tools for simulation and design is another stumbling block towards the development of communication protocols, which are crucial in enhancing the efficiency, robustness, fault tolerance and power consumption of WSNs. In this thesis, we propose smart sensor layouts and efficient data routing algorithms to conserve battery power while preserving the communications and data gathering capability of WSNs. The proposed routing model can be implemented with other routing algorithms thus increasing the battery power lifetime as well as the reliability of the WSN. The performance of the proposed technique has been investigated by developing a detailed computer simulation based on object oriented programming (OOP).
