Abstract	:	This dissertation argues that within specific, historical, material conditions, a work of art can transform the configuration of conditions that make the world. It can do so by creating virtual alliances between images that wield real impact. From the premise that a work of art is more activity than object, the dissertation explores how art can invent options, variations or "ways out" of the conditions at hand. Rather than approaching questions concerning the meaning of art, this dissertation takes seriously the following question: "How does a work of art work?" Each chapter explores the productive difficulty created by a work of art, in an instance in which art has become a problem in the world. The dissertation necessarily crosses boundaries of both genre and media in order to address the following: two novellas by Marguerite Duras that approaches the problem of writing as it conditions the representation of a female self; Martinican-born essayist Suzanne Césaire's writing on the difficulty of "becoming Martinique"; an analysis of music in Newark based poet, playwright and critic Amiri Baraka's poems; Iranian-born, New York City-based photographer and filmmaker Shirin Neshat's "Rebellious Silence" from her Women of Allah photographic series; the American-born sculptor Richard Serra's definition of art as an "activity that burns itself out" in light of his destroyed sculpture, Tilted Arc.
