Abstract:The project examines the performance of Damascus Historical Museum (DHM), Syria, in the light of practices set forth by museum theory, the theory of Historical House Museums, and theory on the historicity of buildings. DHM, being recognized as an HHM, professes only cultural goals. However, it fails to fully achieve them, and equally falls short on embracing HMMs' typical educational missions. Faced with DHM's failure to fulfill those missions when similar museums are transcending them by becoming centers for social activism and change, this project designed a two-phased framework for reform. The framework redefines DHM's vocation, identifies a program of studies for the reform, and offers an implementation plan. The project studies would help DHM gradually achieve its cultural mission, while follow-up studies will be launched by DHM, and eventually lead to a phased introduction of education and social activism functions as DHM gains experience with new research and instruments.
