Abstract:Metamorphoses is a mythological poem by Ovid written during the Augustan morality crusade. Mary Zimmerman's play Metamorphoses, while drawing most of its content from Ovid's poem, exhibits Zimmerman's unique way of putting all the different stories together into one piece. The California State University Long Beach production of the play recognized the relationships among the deities, mortals, and storytellers to explore Zimmerman's various stories of "metamorphoses." The lighting design of the production examined the psychological and symbolic meanings of the shapes and colors to reveal the microcosm of the human mind related in the play.
