Abstract	:	The spread of avian influenza A (H5N1) is a growing threat for human health because of its potential to cause a global pandemic. The Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries in a pandemic scenario because it is surrounded by countries greatly affected by avian influenza outbreaks such as Vietnam, Indonesia, China and Cambodia. This study investigates how avian influenza is portrayed in the leading Philippine newspaper. It also investigates how the news frames differ with the year and the reporting on country with and without human cases of avian influenza. Content analysis was conducted on a sample of 50 randomly selected articles published during the time period of 2004 to 2006 in The Philippine Daily Inquirer , which has the widest distribution in the Philippines. Analysis of mass media coverage of avian influenza offers insight into the social understanding of the risks and policies related to this potential pandemic.
