Abstract:The moderating roles of: (1) individualism-collectivism; and (2) work locus of control on the organizational stress-psychological strain relationship and the relationship between psychological strain and the organizationally valued outcomes of job satisfaction, job involvement, organizational commitment, propensity to leave, and life satisfaction are examined in five national contexts: United States (U.S.), Australia, India, South Korea, and Indonesia. These countries are selected for their differential standing on the cultural value dimension of individualism-collectivism. A conceptual model is developed and tested for its validity and generalizability. There is partial support for the hypothesized moderating relationships but the overall pattern of results is mixed and inconclusive. The relationships between the facets of organizational stress and psychological strain are not significant in all countries. Better support is found for the relationships between psychological strain and organizationally valued work outcomes; however, the relationship between psychological strain and job involvement is in the opposite direct predicted in all five countries. Limitations of the present study are discussed. The findings are interpreted for their implications for the role of cultural variations in future research on organizational stress.
