Abstract:Interference testing between horizontal wells has become a valuable tool in characterization of heterogeneous reservoirs. However, the current methods of analyzing the interference testing between horizontal wells using single layer homogeneous model for heterogeneous system like layered formation can result in errors in the estimated average reservoir properties. This work presents a study of the effect of layering on the response at the observation well in horizontal well interference testing in a two-layer reservoir, and the error caused by estimating the reservoir parameters using a single layer analytical model. A numerical approach is employed to study the effect of parameters like omega ω, kappa κ, vertical permeability and distance between the horizontal wells on observation well response in an interference testing with horizontal wells in a two-layer reservoir. The results of the study show that in an interference testing in a two-layer reservoir, observation well pressure response deviates from equivalent single layer system response. This duration depends on the contrast of transmissibility and storage between the two layers. The deviation is most pronounced for small ω and large κ. However, as the distance between the wells increases, the deviation of the observation well response from the equivalent single layer system response decreases. If the contrast in transmissibility and storage between the layers is large, the vertical permeability has considerable effect on the observation well response. It was also found that, when analyzing interference test data conducted in a two-layered reservoir for long duration, assuming single layer model, the error in estimated transmissibility is low and in estimated storage is large. However, for short duration test, errors in both transmissibility and storage can be very high.
