Abstract
:
This investigation will examine how the modern state formation process and accompanying incorporation of Iraq into the world capitalist market set the stage for the instability and recurrent crises that have characterised Iraq history. Iraq's socio-political and economic development from the time of the British invasion of Baghdad in 1917 up until the Gulf War of 1991 will be analysed. Iraq's initial formation as a state along with the articulation of a semi-feudal mode of production with an encroaching capitalist mode set the stage for the inherent instability that has characterised Iraq. The colonial state's use of coercion and modern technologies of power in order to legitimate its rule also marked the beginning of the state's policy of violence in response to opposition and conflict. The overall instability of Iraq was manifested in a series of crises, as well as subsequent attempts to resolve them. In the post-World War II era, the reproduction of a highly exploitative semi-feudal agrarian system resulted in a wave of rural-urban peasant migration and also formed the basis for the 1958 revolutionary overthrow of the British-backed monarchy. Under the rule of the Ba'thist Party in the late 1960s onwards, the nationalisation of the country's profitable oil industry, extricated the state from the demands of citizens and consolidated the authoritarian Ba'th regime. The two Gulf wars that took place during this period are conceptualised as attempts to resolve crises within an inherently unstable system, as well as an extension of the policy of violence that has underpinned the Iraqi state form since its inception.
