Abstract:In this thesis, advantages of using a charge-pump based frequency lock loop circuit was identified for frequency locking two lasers. The goal was to implement the circuit in an existing optical fiber based distributed sensing system where it will replace a commercial source-locking frequency counter. The frequency locking circuit was constructed and further investigated to aid in an optical phase lock loop (OPLL) for generating microwave signals with high acquisition range, fine frequency tuning and low phase noise. The second part of this thesis was aimed for RF over fiber based applications. A two loop heterodyne locking configuration was adopted where the charge-pump based frequency locking circuit was utilized for initial pull-in of the frequency and a second loop was used for phase locking. Restrictions imposed by a large loop delay of 12 ns and summed laser linewidth of 300 kHz were studied and presented. The OPLL was constructed with commercially available low cost discreet components. The OPLL showed a high pull-in range of 3.7 GHz with a continuous locking from 8.12 to 11.94 GHz. The total phase error variance was determined to be 1.1047 rad2 and the noise level was less than -35 dBc/Hz close to the carrier.
