Abstract:Vacuum polarization denotes all quantum field corrections to a freely propagating vector or axial vector field. It is pertinent to theoretical calculations based on a number of interesting experiments such as measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of muon, and decay of the τ lepton. Lattice quantum field theory is constructed by formulating QFT on a lattice of spacetime sites. In the limit of vanishing lattice spacings, continuum formulation is recovered. In practice, we can use small lattice spacing to obtain physical results of interest with reasonable precision. At present, lattice QFT is the only tool for non-perturbative QFT calculations. We study the Feynman amplitude of the vacuum polarization process for both vector and axial external fields (ΠV and Π A) in the framework of lattice QFT. Our emphasis will be on issues relevant specifically to the theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD). We will address crucial details such as divergences, chiral symmetry breaking, relative magnitude of lattice artifacts, and the equivalence of twisted mass lattice QCD and lattice QCD.
