Almería (Madīnat al-Mariyya, from marāʾa , “watchtower”) was an important city of al-Andalus situated on the southeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The city arose out of a port, al-Bayyāna (Span., Pechina), established during the mid-third/ninth century. Although there exist some archaeological remains from previous times, such as a recently found wall that dates possibly from the late Roman period, very little is known about the transition of this settlement to the one found in the Middle Ages.
