This book presents the first comprehensive treatment of all types of barrier island systems in all geologic settings. Each chapter follows a common theme, yet each also has its own story to tell. The examples are widespread and well illustrated. The book presents all types of barriers while concentrating on the coast of the United States. Other barriers of the world are also covered in an abbreviated manner. The Holocene barriers treated here can be extrapolated into the ancient stratigraphic record. The chapters are designed to be comprehensive state-of-the-art summaries of the respective barrier systems rather than the usual specific treatment that is typical of individual research reports or symposia monographs.
